St. John’s defensive end Tyree Johnson committed to Texas A&M on Friday.
“I picked Texas A&M because as soon as I stepped on campus I fell in love with the place,” Johnson told Scout. “I built a great relationship with the coaches and it was the right fit for me.”
Johnson is rated a three-star, ranked the No. 31 weak side defensive end and the No. 5 player in Washington, D.C. He had offers from 26 schools, but Maryland, Rutgers, Virginia Tech and Tennessee were his finalists.
The Aggies last recruiting class featured former St. John’s linebacker/ wide receiver and Johnson’s former teammate Aaron Hansford. Despite his commitment, Johnson still plans to take all five official visits he has set.
“I think I deserve to take visits because I worked hard for them,” Johnson told Scout. “I feel comfortable with (Texas A&M) so I want to go ahead and get my spot before it’s taken.”
Johnson will be apart of a loaded St. John’s team that looks to win its first conference championship since 1989.
