Maryland Head Coach Mike Locksley and the rest of the coaching staff was busy during the 2019 National Signing Day, signing 17 players and making a strong emphasis on recruiting in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area.

One of the biggest and most surprising signing on Wednesday was four-star quarterback Lance LeGendre, who picked the Terps over Florida State, Alabama, Georgia and Miami.

“We were fortune to be able to sign Lance LeGendre,” Locksley said during a press conference. “He was a guy we had started recruiting at Alabama so his name was on our board for quite some time and we’re very familiar with him.”

Locksley didn’t make a strong push for LeGendre to come to Maryland until he found the Warren Easton senior was still uncommitted two weeks ago.

“Our recruiting process for him at Maryland probably started about two weeks ago,” Locksley said. “I actually found out that he was still available with the ties we had in Louisiana from my time at Alabama.”

LeGendre, a New Orleans native, is ranked the ninth best dual-threat quarterback in the nation and the 14th best player in Louisiana. LeGendre had an impressive senior season, registering 2,200 yards and 32 touchdowns.

“If you look at him, he’s one of the dual-threat guys who has the opportunity to beat you with his arm and his feet,” Locksley said. “We think he’s going to be a great addition to the quarterback room, which already has some pretty talented players as well.”

LeGendre’s playing style should fit well in the Terps’ offensive scheme and their quarterback group, which consist of Tyrell Pigrome, Max Bortenschlager, Tyler DeSue and Kasim Hill, who is recovering from a Torn ACL injury.

“It’s a shame they only showed the video of Lance [LeGendre] but those emotions are rolling all morning long,” Locksley said. “Obviously, getting a quarterback of Lance’s caliber this late in the game — it was a team effort.”
