DeMatha will take on Good Counsel in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship on Saturday. The matchup between the two gridirons will be the ninth time in 11 seasons the two teams have met in the title game.

The last time these two teams meet was in October when the Falcons beat the Stags, 21-14. It was a close game throughout, and both teams had its running game on display. The Stags scored first when quarterback Beau English threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Darryl Turner.

Two touchdowns by Good Counsel’s sophomore running back Mohamed Ibrahim gave the Falcons a 14-6 going into halftime.

DeMatha tied the game up with a three yard touchdown run by Lorenzo Harrison and a two point conversion by Anthony McFarland in the fourth quarter. In the closing seconds of the game, Good Counsel’s quarterback Andres Castillo scored the game winning touchdown.

Overall it’s been a great year for both teams. DeMatha started the season off slow, but they got it together and became one of the best teams in the conference. They won a lot of big games, especially the game last week when they beat Gonzaga in the semifinals.

Good Counsel on the other hand went undefeated in conference play and knocked off Bishop McNamara in the conference semifinals.

The Stags has a powerful run game that is led by WCAC First-Team running backs Anthony McFarland and Lorenzo Harrison. The team’s passing game has been good this season too.  English has thrown for 1,610 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Good Counsel has a defense that can shut down DeMatha’s run game. The defense is led by Darius Fullwood and linebacker Keandre Jones. Teams struggled against the Falcons defense and it showed in last week’s game against McNamara. Good Counsel tallied six sacks and forced two turnovers.

This year’s WCAC Championship is going to be an interesting one. DeMatha is looking to win back-to-back championships, while Good Counsel is looking to win its fifth championship in the last six seasons. Both teams have a history with one another, and expect them to come out of the gates strong.

Prediction: Good Counsel over DeMatha 17-14
