Ryan’s Top Five Basketball Players in the WCAC going into the 2015-16 season

Even though 2015- 2016 WCAC basketball season is a few months away, it’s never too early to break down my top five players in the conference. The WCAC is filled with talented and Division I caliber players so,  it took me a lot of thinking to decide who made the cut and where should they be placed.  The players on this list is a group of some of the best players in the country. Two players already committed, and the other three are undecided. Schools that are looking at these players are Kentucky, Duke, Maryland, NC State, Arizona, and etc. So without further ado, here is my list of the top five players in the WCAC.

1. Markelle Fultz, DeMatha

Markelle is continuing to take the nation by storm. He is rank number 21 in the ESPN Top-100.  Fultz is the number one shooting guard in the state of Maryland, and number two in the East Coast. The 2015 WCAC Player of the Year had a huge list of offers going into the summer, but now it has expanded. Schools like North Carolina, Kentucky, and California wants to add Fultz to their program. Markelle is an aggressive scorer that can shoot from midrange, and behind the arc. He is good in transition and an excellent finisher. Fultz continues to get better and will be problem for teams in the upcoming season.

2. VJ King, Paul VI

Taking the second spot on my list is the 25th best player in the nation, VJ King. The Louisville commit was a first team All-WCAC and second in the conference in scoring this past season. Before announcing his alliance to Louisville he had offers from Kentucky, Syracuse, Georgetown, Florida State, and many more. VJ has great size at six-foot six. He is solid scorer from the mid-range and the three-point line. The rising made a big impact to Paul VI in his first year with the team and expect him to do the same in his last year.

3. Anthony Cowan, St. John’s  

Coming in at number three on my list is the St. John’s point guard Anthony Cowan. Cowan finished off his junior year strong by scoring 40 points against Bishop O’Connell,  leading the conference in scoring, and helping the Cadets reach the semifinals of the WCAC playoffs.  Anthony will be heading to Maryland after his senior year and one for sure, the Terps will be getting a great addition to their roster. He is a terrific long-range shooter, and a good passer. Cowan is really quick and defends the ball well. If you like watching good players, you will enjoy watching Anthony Cowan play.

4. DJ Harvey, DeMatha 

DJ Harvey is arguably one of the best players in his 2017 class. On Scouts.com, they list Harvey as the number one small forward in Maryland, the second best small forward in the country, and the ninth best player in the nation. DJ has been a starter on the varsity team at DeMatha since he was a freshmen which is hard to do. Harvey is athletic, and knows how to finish above the rim. He is a good shooter that knows how to handle the ball well. Right now DJ has offers from schools like Maryland, Georgetown, NC State, Arizona, and Duke.

5. Jamir Moultrie, Bishop McNamara

Closing out my list is the point guard from Bishop McNamara Jamir Moultrie. In his freshmen year, Jamir averaged 16.1 points per game. He improved on that his past season when he averaged 17.5 points per game, was second in the conference in three pointers made, awarded first team All-WCAC and fourth team All-Met. Jamir lead Bishop McNamara to a 11-7 record in the WCAC and 20-11 overall.  During the 2014-15 season, McNamara knocked off teams like DeMatha, St. John’s, and National Christian Academy. Schools like West Virginia, High Point, and Memphis have given Jamir scholarship offers. Since he is only a junior, expect him get more.
