Gonzaga Lacrosse Sneaks Into The Top 10 Of The USA Today Super 25 Rankings

In the latest Super 25 boys lacrosse rankings by USA Today, Gonzaga College High School (DC) found their way into the No. 9 spot.

Last week, the Purple Eagles were ranked No. 11 but a big 14-8 win against Haverford on Apr. 9 allowed them to move up in the rankings. Calvert Hall (MD) sits at No. 3 after a 17-5 conference victory over Mt. Joseph. Loyola Blakefield School of Baltimore, MD is sitting at the No. 8 spot. While Bullis is No. 8, McDonogh (MD) is No. 11, Boys Latin (MD) is No. 12 and Landon School (MD) is ranked No. 17.

This season, Gonzaga is 10-2 and is currently on a four game winning streak. During this streak, the Purple Eagles is averaging 12.5 goals a game.  In their last game against Landon School on April 12, the Eagles won 13-9. Senior midfielder Avery Myers had four goals and two assists while senior Sam Offutt had three goals.

In the second quarter of the game, Gonzaga outscored Landon 6-1. The Eagles also had a 11-4 win over Bullis School at the beginning of the season and scored a season high 18 goals in a victory over Bishop Ireton.

Team captain Avery Myers leads the team and is third in the area in goals with 29. Jack Myers is second on team with 24 goals, senior midfielder Nick McEvoy has netted in 21 goals and senior Mickey Stanton has 20 goals so far this spring.

Offutt is the team’s leader in assists with 17. junior Brian Townsend has tallied 12 assist  while senior Luke McCaleb recorded 11 assists. Senior goalie George Christopher has been solid throughout the spring. Christopher is second in the area in saves 97. He is behind Sidwell Friends Preston Heard, who has 117 saves.

Gonzaga’s next game will be on April 15 against Good Counsel.
