The University of Maryland annouced on Monday that forward Bruno Fernando will return for his sophomore season after withdrawing his name from the 2018 NBA Draft.

“I’m appreciative for the opportunity to go through the NBA draft process,” Fernando said in a press release by the school. “I received a great deal of feedback over the past six weeks that has been beneficial in making this decision. After significant discussions with my family and Coach Turgeon, I have decided to return to Maryland for my sophomore year. I’m excited to continue my education and look forward to a great season.”

Fernando entered the NBA Draft without an agent alongside teammate Kevin Huerter, who has yet to make his decision.

Fernando couldn’t generate first-round buzz due to the amount of front court talent in this year’s draft. However, Fernando’s athleticism and aggressiveness around the rim gives him the potential to be a lottery pick in next year’s draft.

Fernando’s return is big for the Terps. The Angola native, who was named to the All-Big Ten Freshmen Team,  averaged 10.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. Fernando spent the 2017-18 season showcasing his ability to the stretch the floor, while being a solid rebounder.

“I’m happy that Bruno went through the process and was able to gather the necessary feedback to make an informed decision on his future,” Turgeon said in the same release. “I think Bruno learned a lot during this process, and it will only make him a better basketball player. We’re really excited to have his energy and passion in our locker room next year.”

Fernando will add much-needed depth to the Terps’ front court, which will feature incoming freshman Jalen Smith, Ivan Bender and Schnider Herard.
