Georgetown men’s basketball finished seventh in the Big East Preseason Coaches’ Poll, which was released on Thursday.
The Hoyas finished last season–which was Patrick Ewing’s first year as head coach–ninth in the conference with a 15-15 record (5-13 in Big East). Senior center Jessie Govan was named to the All-Big East Preseason First Team. Govan averaged a double-double, 17 points and 10 rebounds. Govan is the only returning Big East player to average a double-double during the 2017-18 season.
The rest of Georgetown’s roster features key returners and interesting newcomers. Sophomores Jamorko Pickett and Jahvon Blair received Big East All-Freshman Team honors last year.
Hoyas’ guard Mac McClung, a three-star guard from Virginia, will be entering his first season after averaging 42 points per game for Gate City High School, breaking Allen Iverson’s single-season and career state scoring records, and becoming a YouTube sensation with his electrifying dunks.
Villanova, the reigning National Champions, finished first in the preseason poll. Senior forward Eric Paschall was named to the All-Big East First Team, while senior guard Phil Booth received second team honors. Wildcats’ freshman point guard Jahvon Quinerly was named Big East Preseason Freshman of the Year alongside Providence guard David Duke.
St. John’s junior guard Shamorie Ponds was named the conference’s preseason player of the year.
The Hoyas will open the season at home against University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Nov. 6.
