WCAC Championship Preview: DeMatha seeks fifth conference title in six years

Everything you need to know before the 2018 WCAC Championship football game.

After a one year absence, DeMatha will return to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference football championship game on Sunday evening to face rival Gonzaga. The Purple Eagles played in the conference title game last season, but lost to St. John’s 30-7.

How They Got Here

DeMatha earned a spot in the conference championship game after defeating Good Counsel in the semifinals last week. Senior defensive back/wide receiver DeMarcco Hellams had two receiving touchdowns, a pair of interceptions and a block punt in the Stags’ 30-14 victory. DeMatha senior running back MarShawn Lloyd registered a rushing touchdown.

Gonzaga shook the DMV when the team defeated St. John’s 24-14 in the conference semifinals. The Cadets was ranked the top team in the area by the Washington Post before falling to the Purple Eagles.

The last time DeMatha and Gonzaga faced each other, the Stags won 27-21 in triple overtime. Lloyd rushed for 154 yards and four touchdowns.

DeMatha and Gonzaga will enter Sunday’s championship ranked the first and second best teams in the Washington Post Top 20 rankings.
