Maryland infielder AJ Lee was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 34th round of the 2019 MLB Draft on Wednesday.
Lee, a Maryland native, was one of the top high school baseball players in the area when he played for St. John’s College High School. Lee was a two-time Washington, D.C. Gatorade Player of the Year and the 2015 All-Met Player of the Year.
Lee had an impressive senior season with the Cadets, hitting .388 with 22 RBI and posting a 0.43 ERA on the mound. Lee helped St. John’s win back-to-back Washington Catholic Athletic Conference honors, while receiving first team all-conference honors.
Lee was Maryland’s top hitter during the 2019 season, registering a .317 batting average and .443 on-base percentage. Lee tallied 60 hits, seven home runs, 36 RBI and 10 stolen bases. Lee was named to the All-Big Ten Third Team for the second team in his college baseball career.
Lee’s senior season with Maryland was his best year since his sophomore campaign, where he had a .307 batting average with eight home runs and 36 runs batted in.
Lee is the second player from Maryland to be selected in this year’s MLB Draft. Pitcher Hunter Parsons was picked up by the New York Mets in the 19th round.
