DeMatha beat Eleanor Roosevelt, 73-65 in a battle between two of the top private and public school boy’s basketball teams in the area on Thursday night.
Stags four-star guard D.J. Harvey started it off for DeMatha, getting a huge block that was called for goaltending. Junior point guard Jaden Faulkner had the defensive responsibilities on the Notre Dame commit early on.
Faulkner had a hard time guarding DeMatha’s top player as Harvey scored 11 points.
Cameron Brown had a great shooting night from behind the arc. Brown nailed a three pointer with 20 seconds left in the first quarter to put Roosevelt up.
Harvey took advantage with the ball in his hands in the final seconds, and hoisted up a three pointer to tie the game at 20 in the first quarter.
DeMatha sophomore Justin Moore, who finished the game with 16 points, came out ready to go the next quarter as he connected on a three point shot, and had a nice drive to the rim during the early parts of the second quarter.
DeMatha’s big men Hunter Dickinson, and Josh Carlton were solid on the defensive end as they made it hard for the Raiders to score in the paint. Carlton had a another good night offensively as he finished with 20 points.
Raiders’ Marquise Certain had a putback layup to put Roosevelt up 36-32 at halftime.
Delaware commit Ryan Allen started off the second half strong, knocking down a three pointer and a tough contested mid-range jumper from 15 feet. Stags went on a 15-0 run and took a 47-36 lead.
Eleanor Roosevelt Barly Kanu, who was on junior varsity last season, finished with 19 points in the game. Kanu knocked down back-to-back three point basket to narrow the Raiders’ deficit to five.
Carlton had a huge two handed dunk to put the Stags up 53-46 at the end of the third. With the Stags up 57-50, Harvey went to the baseline and attempted throw down a reverse dunk, but he was then denied by Certain.
Allen hit a three pointer from the top of the key to extend DeMatha’s lead to 60-50. The Raiders managed to cut the deficit down to 67-63 with under a minute left in the game.
That was the closest the Raiders got as the Stags were able to pull off the victory in a packed gymnasium.
