St. John’s is aiming for a fourth straight WCAC title

St. John's, and DeMatha will face each other in the conference championship game for the first time since 2015.

St. John’s, who has been one of the teams in the area over the last few seasons, will seek to continue it’s surpremacy in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference when the team takes on DeMatha in the championship series on Friday.

Saturday, 4:00 p.m.

Sunday, 4:00 p.m. (if necessary)

Get to know St. John’s 

The Cadets are ranked No. 6 team in the Washington Post All-Met rankings with a 22-7 record and a 17-3 conference record. St. John’s started the season 2-2 before going on an impressive 11-game winning streak. Senior infielder Jack Roberts became the ninth player in school history to win WCAC Player of the Year and the first since 2012.

St. John’s is fresh off a 5-2 victory over Paul VI (19-10) in game three of the WCAC Semifinals. The Cadets took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Paul VI tied the game in the third inning. St. John’s Peter Costigan hit a clutch two-run single with the bases loaded in the fifth inning to led his team to the win. The Cadets beat the Panthers 4-2 in game two after Paul VI won game one, 3-0.

Get to know DeMatha 

DeMatha are heading into Friday’s game with a 21-8 record and 12-4 conference record, which place the Stags in second place in the WCAC. The Stags entered the playoffs on a high note, winning four of their last five regular season games.

DeMatha’s pitcher Thomas Keehn helped his team reach the championship game with his solid outing against Good Counsel in the semifinals on Wednesday. Keehn threw a two-hit shutout, while striking out nine batters to secure a 1-0 victory.

The Stags won the first game of the semifinals series then dropped game two, 9-3 on Tuesday.

  • St. John’s will be seeking to win it’s fourth straight WCAC title.
  • DeMatha is looking to win it’s 25th conference championship in school history.
  • The Stags have made it to the championship game for the third time in the last four years.
  • The last time DeMatha won the championship was in 2013.
  • DeMatha and St. John’s faced each other in the 2015 WCAC Championship, where the Cadets won the series, 2-1.
