Gonzaga College High School won its second Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title in three years after beating St. John’s 60-56 at American University on Monday evening.
Purple Eagles’ forward Terrance Williams finished 20 points. The four-star recruit had 11 points in the first half to give Gonzaga an early advantage.
Gonzaga led by as many as 14 points until St. John’s guard Casey Morsell, whose last second block in the semifinals put the Cadets in the championship, helped his team cut into the large deficit.
Morsell nailed a three-pointer with eight seconds left to cut Gonzaga’s lead to 57-55. Williams secured Gonzaga’s victory when he converted three of his last four free throws.
Gonzaga guard Anwar Gill had 19 points. Morsell also scored 19 points to lead St. John’s.
