St. John’s suffered its first loss of the season after falling to Dorman High School (SC) 69-60 in the Beach Ball Classic championship on Tuesday evening.
After the Cadets (11-1) jumped out to a two-point lead during the opening minutes of the game, Dorman went on a 7-0 run and never looked back.
Myles Tate and P.J. Hall combined to score 23 of the Dorman’s 35 first half points. The Cavaliers didn’t let up on the gas in the second half, taking a 44-34 lead through the first six minutes.
St. John’s managed to cut the lead down to 48-43 until Hall, a four-star recruit, knocked down a pair of jumpers to give Dorman a double-digit lead. Hall sealed the victory for the Cavaliers when he converted a jump shot, which put his team up 12 points with 2:24 remaining in the game.
Hall finished the game with 20 points and five rebounds. Tate registered 23 points, five rebounds and six assists.
Dorman dominated in the paint, outscoring St. John’s 46-22.
The Cadets were led by John Square Jr., who finished with 17 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Ishmael Leggett, a Rhode Island commit, tallied 14 points on 3-11 shooting and went 0-5 from the three-point line.
